The Urging Ordeal

~THE URGING ORDEAL~

Eva was heading for a jog on a Friday evening beside a nearby lake. She could see the hills fading in the fog and to her surprise there were no birds in the sight. She was certainly thinking of the dream from last night and only she could recall was flashes of her miserable days in the orphanage and the harassment she went through. But then she tried to abolish those thoughts by feeling grateful for the parents who adopted and raised her.

Her phone rang interrupting her stream, it was an unknown number.

“Hi, am I speaking to Ms. Eva Holmes?”, the unfamiliar voice responded from the other side.

Trying to recognize, she replied with a pause. “Yes, you are! Who’s this?”

“I’m Josh from Merry Orphanage. As you are currently an incredible lawyer and most of all you grew up in this orphanage itself, it would be an honor to invite you to our 30th anniversary to encourage our children and share your experience”, he offered.

Eva hesitated and said, “umm… can I have some time to think about it?” because her childhood there was a gloomy nightmare to her and was something, she didn’t like to talk about.

“No problem, I’m looking forward for a positive response till tomorrow morning”, and he hang up the phone.

As she returned back home, she was restlessly thinking about her decision because her childhood ordeals were taking shape. She spent whole night to keep those glimpses away and get some sleep.

She couldn’t realize how late she fell asleep until was woken up by Josh’s call.

“Good morning Ms. Holmes, I’m expecting that you’ve made your decision.”

Drowsily, Eva replied, “I guess so. I think it would be a bliss to join your celebrations.”

“Oh! That’s spectacular, but it would be an icing on the cake if we receive a pleasant donation from your side to retain the smiles on our children’s faces.”

“Sure. Please provide me with the details, I shall make the arrangements by the evening.”

And there was again an abrupt ending to the phone call.

The next days flew swiftly with the busy schedule, court hearings and client meetings that even the slightest hint regarding the orphanage wasn’t in Holmes’s mind.

But the day of anniversary celebrations was knocking on her door like an alert and she could sense some gnarly vibes in her surroundings.

“And it is my pleasure to introduce to all of you Ms. Eva Holmes, I would request the cook to present ma’am a token of our gratitude and the maid along with the kids to welcome our guest of honor.”, announced Josh.

In her experience, the speech was made every reluctantly because she could picturize her own self in the eyes of the selfless girls standing in the crowd of the orphans.

After the formal function she headed to Josh’s Office for the farewell tea. During which she asked him regarding the working of the orphanage and the usage of the donations.

“Mr. Josh can you please bring it to my information how my donations are going to be utilized and how the orphans will be benefitted?”

“Y…y…yesss ofcourse, m..ma..madam Holmes.” He replied timidly and tried to change the topic of the conversation.

“Would you like to distribute some sweets amongst the kids?”

“No, can we first discuss upon the topic I just opened?” she refused strongly to Josh’s question.

However, she left the chair and accepted to interact with children and somehow the thought of inquiring about the functioning of the orphanage went back to the back of her head.

That day’s interaction, rather than making her content made her agitated to inquire deep down about Josh.

She took out his call history and with the help of her lawyer license she called Josh with the number of his most contacted person.

“Oh Mrs. Malkins I was about to call you; everything went as planned. The donation made by foolish Ms. Holmes and the earnings through our human trafficking makes us capable to leave this country and head to start our business in the next country on our list. The children have been put to bed with the use of sleeping pills in the dinner, we are ready to leave on your command”, he blabbers out rapidly.

“Hello? Mrs. Malkins, are you on the line?”  he suspected

Not trying to create any doubts Eva faked a cough

“Ohh, no problems Mrs. Malkins. Kindly order us what to do next?”

“Yes Josh! Next you just have to live a miserable life behind the bars” Eva declared!

THE END
